that is a thousand more than mitt romney during the course of that debate. psych physiologists say that since 1980, the candidate who blinked the least during the debates went on to win the popular vote. there are exceptions, though. in 2004, president george w. bush not only blinked more in the debate against senator john kerry, he also won re-election, so there you go. >>> up next, getting in the way of democracy. the latest news that could affect who might get stopped on their way...

you knew mitt romney had to have a good debate. what were you guys thinking as you saw this thing unwind and saw that the president not only didn't bring his "a" game, he just didn't show up, and mitt was on top of his game. what were you thinking? >> as we were watching it, we were thinking we were at the right place at the right time. you think of all the debate preparation. there's a lot of work and staff's very involved. at the end of the day, it's his ball. mitt romney gets on that stage. he's throwing the ball. and the only thing he can control is him, what he does, what he says, what comes out of his mouth. >> doesn't matter how much you prep him, it's up to him. >> and it doesn't matter what the moderator does. it doesn't matter what the president does. the one thing that's in his control is the case he makes. and it's the first time that there was -- you know, you think about the way people portrayed mitt romney over the past few months as though he's some sort of monster. and suddenly we got to see the guy that we know. t

right now, we're already seeing that mitt romney is using personal stories in the debate of people he met on the campaign trail. and using them on the stump in states like florida, as he is doing this weekend. we are seeing a more energetic and happier mitt romney. and that is a good image for him. and of course, we're seeing ads come out about the debates on both sides and could stop a second look. but it should help, for now. >> so david, the second presidential debate, could it potentially erase all the talk like this. because the president is not going to be caught flat-footed the second time around, i'm guessing? >> i highly doubt it. he is very competitive. and when he is on his game he is very good. so i think what it does is raise expectations to a degree for romney. but also for the president, because all of us are expecting him to come back, come out with guns blazing, i think for romney the key is not that he needs to decisively win as he did in the first debate, but if he can hold his own and look as sharp as he did, then even with a good, strong president obama performanc

ann romney says during past debates, her husband routinely looked over at her for reassurance. tomorrow, is the obama's 20th wedding anniversary. mrs. obama recently joked she would like her husband to write love you, on his hand so she and millions of americans can see it when he waves. >> peter, thanks. >>> our political director chuck todd is also part of our team in denver, tonight debeauing our predebate numbers. how interesting that 34 states are voting, but this race is on the move, either a gaffe or a big moment at one of these debates could change the numbers further. >> reporter: look, it's absolutely true. and let's look at our new poll. there are two numbers that matter more when judging whether a president wins re-election or not. for the president right now, his job approval rating is at 49%. disapproval at 48. our pollsters tell us that 49 is in the re-elect zone. look at this, the direction of the country, 40% say we're on the right track. it's not a great number, but it's the highest number we've recorded in three and a half years. let's move to the head-to-hea

nobody's ever accused romney of -- i mean obama of being a great debater. his only eloquence is off the teleprompter, in which he's very good at delivering a set piece, but not in that format. romney, on the other hand, has gotten better and better over several years, and down in florida is a good example of what he did, you know. he's been called everything and faced with every kind of issue imaginable. you know, he's a good debater. so he was on top of his game, and obama just, you know, kind of phoned it in, thought that was all that was necessary. >> calling it winning or losing, making it into a scoring event, and it truly is not. i'm curious, is it that governor romney did such a good job or that president obama was so off his game and lost? or is it substance? >> well, i've always thought that romney was somewhat in a position that ronald reagan was back in 1980, that people were looking for a change. carter had faced all of these difficulties, you know, the iranian hostage, double-digit misery index, in many respects worse situation than obama faces
